Meet Arthur Hayes in person!

"(《世界人权宣言》) 加密 world is no stranger to this name. As co-founder of BitMEX and CIO of Maelstrom, Arthur Hayes is both a pioneering industry builder and a leading market forecaster. He not only has a theoretical background in economics from Wharton School, but also spent years trading at Deutsche Bank and Citigroup before making his mark in the crypto space.

Just on August 22, Odaily Planet Daily compiled Arthur Hayes’ latest 10,000-word interview .

According to their latest playbook: Powell insists on not cutting interest rates, while Trump seeks other ways to “squeeze out liquidity”; a major bull market is inevitable, and all financial assets tied to Trump’s policies will benefit; the crypto market is experiencing volatility in the fall, and dips are a good time to add to positions; ETH has opened up room for growth after breaking a new high, potentially reaching $10,000-20,000 in the next few years; crypto treasury companies are unlikely to collapse easily; and among altcoins, ENA and HYPE are key.

Whether in external interviews or through X-account interactions, Arthur Hayes always clearly articulates his opinions and supporting evidence, unafraid of backlash and adept at adapting his arguments. On August 24, thanks to the recommendation of our friendly media CoinPost, Odaily Planet Daily had the honor of interviewing Arthur Hayes before the official start of Tokyo WebX.

While Arthur frequently discusses macroeconomic analysis and market predictions, this conversation also touched on topics less commonly discussed in the market, such as his perspectives on WLFI ( trading and initial claims will open on September 1st ), YZY ( Kanye West’s new Memecoin ), gold, AI, and longevity technology, as well as his personal idols, daily routine, and hobbies. Arthur Hayes: Hahahaha, nice.

Odaily Planet Daily: Let’s start today with a macroeconomic discussion: Powell. A few days ago, you said he wouldn’t “give in” and cut interest rates, but it seems that’s changed (see: “ Powell hints at rate cuts, ETH hits new highs, what’s the outlook? “). So, what are your latest market predictions?

Arthur Hayes: Powell has softened his stance this time, saying he will “provide money” for Trump to achieve his economic goals. Therefore, I believe the pace of dollar issuance will accelerate, and the Federal Reserve will become more aligned with Trump’s ideas. Bitcoin could reach $250,000 by the end of the year.

Odaily Planet Daily: Over the past period, most altcoins have not seen as much growth as ETH. When will the altcoin season begin? Is holding onto ETH a better option for buying altcoins?

Arthur Hayes: There’s no altcoin season. Over the past 18 months, only HyperLiquid has performed exceptionally well. Altcoins are facing scrutiny. Their common flaws are high FDV, low circulation, and high capital control. Projects lack data and users, leading the community to punish these projects and stop holding them.

Odaily Planet Daily: There’s been a recent market fluctuation: WLFI has officially announced its September 1st launch. What are your thoughts on the token’s pre-market valuation? (Background: Hyperliquid has already launched a WLFI-USD pre-release contract ) Will the market be swayed by the launch of WLFI?

Arthur Hayes: I haven’t looked at its valuation at all. Honestly, I don’t really know what this project is about. Is it a hedge fund or a DApp store? I don’t pay attention and don’t care. As for the impact on the crypto market, Trump’s children have the power to decide which DeFi projects to allocate WLFI tokens to, but I haven’t done any research, so I won’t go into details.

Odaily Planet Daily: Do you have an investment research team? With the rapid changes in the global macroeconomy, how do you prioritize amidst the flood of information?

Arthur Hayes: We actually have a team focused on early-stage projects. If we find a good one, we’ll sign on as advisors. I’m primarily responsible for liquidity trading, focusing on macroeconomic variables like interest rate adjustments and inflation rates. We also invest in projects that I personally like. They typically have rapid user growth, are profitable, and use the proceeds to repurchase tokens. Our team works together to identify projects that possess these characteristics. They may not necessarily yield a thousand-fold return, but at least they won’t crash tomorrow.

Odaily Planet Daily: What do you say about Kanye’s YZY? It doesn’t fit any of them?

Arthur Hayes: Hahaha, YZY, hahaha, I haven’t had enough. It’s different. YZY is a memecoin. I treat it like a lottery . Most memecoins end up worthless, so I’m just playing around with it.

Odaily Planet Daily: You have a good mindset, haha. What is your “first principle” when acquiring information?

Arthur Hayes: I only care about liquidity, which is my primary perspective when looking at investment products . Crypto liquidity is expanding, and BTC is the best and safest. I do have some altcoins, but overall I rarely pay attention to them.

Odaily Planet Daily: Do you have any special information channels?

Arthur Hayes: No.

Odaily Planet Daily: What about the rule makers? Will there be a communication channel?

Arthur Hayes: Hahaha, I’m only famous in Crypto, but not in the “core circle” of news. I still read other people’s research reports.

Odaily Planet Daily: In the industry, do you have any friends with whom you can exchange projects or ideas?

Arthur Hayes: Not really. I mainly stay with my team and focus on macroeconomic variables—when liquidity expands and the market is bullish, we go all in. When things go south, we pull out. That’s trend trading, isn’t it?

Odaily Planet Daily: Who is your investment idol?

Arthur Hayes: (Thinking for a long time), Yeah, probably Stanley Druckenmiller. (Note: He managed money for George Soros from 1988 to 2000 and was the former chairman and president of Duquesne Capital. The fund closed 10 years later with over $12 billion in assets. Odaily Planet Daily: What about your own position composition? Apart from the wallets that we often “spy on the chain”, could you please reveal it?

Arthur Hayes: BTC – 60%, ETH – 20%, altcoins – 20%.

Odaily Planet Daily: In which products do you manage your coins?

Arthur Hayes: I don’t do lending. I use Ethena to collateralize USDe. It’s hard to tell if other protocols are good for lending, and I don’t want to take the risk.

Odaily Planet Daily: Besides coins, invest in whatever you want and buy whatever you want.

Arthur Hayes: I bought a ton of gold.

Odaily Planet Daily: Wait, you mean the physical gold bars? Are they in Switzerland?

Arthur Hayes: Hahaha, yes, gold bars, where are they? Somewhere in the world anyway.

Odaily Planet Daily: Taiku La. Did you recently invest in a stem cell injection longevity technology company (Bloomberg source)? Can you share more about this?

Arthur Hayes: Yes, I do. I’m very concerned about healthy living and improving my quality of life. Humans have devoted a lot of energy to trying to decipher the secrets of aging and how to reverse aging. As for the future, I imagine I’ll enjoy it to the fullest.

Odaily Planet Daily: Beyond health, what are your visions for the future of human life? Will AI take over everything by 2050? Will you no longer need to invest or trade?

Arthur Hayes: People haven’t figured out how they want to live their lives. I haven’t figured it out either.

Odaily Planet Daily: Since we are talking about enjoying life, what are your recent travel plans?

Arthur Hayes: During the summer vacation, I travel around, get in shape, and prepare for the ski season. In the winter, I’ll go to the ski resorts in Hokkaido.

Odaily Planet Daily: I just came from Sapporo! I went to see Shiina Ringo at RSR (Rock Music Festival). It was cooler than Tokyo.

Arthur Hayes: OK, I haven’t really been there in the summer.

Odaily Planet Daily: What is your daily rhythm?

Arthur Hayes: I exercise three hours a day, read books—novels, finance—whatever interests me, and make a few hours of phone calls each week. My elders don’t need regular care; I just show up when something happens.

Odaily Planet Daily: Sounds pretty healthy. What are your plans or tasks for this trip to Japan? Speaking of conferences, besides output, what kind of input do you look forward to when you attend them?

Arthur Hayes: My stay will be short. I’ll be leaving after my speech tomorrow, and I don’t have any meetings with Japanese institutions or projects. Regarding stablecoins, I have some things I’d like to discuss. I’ll see how the audience responds after my speech tomorrow.

Odaily Planet Daily: What are your thoughts on Japanese Yen and Hong Kong Dollar stablecoins?

Arthur Hayes: Honestly, they’re not very useful. The fiat currencies and banking systems in Japan and Hong Kong are functioning well, so stablecoins aren’t really necessary. USD-denominated stablecoins are the real need, as they’re really useful to people in other regions.
